Graylyn International Conference Center

Winston Salem, North Carolina

Around a century ago, Bowman Gray (founder of Wachovia banks) purchased 87 acres of pristine North Carolina pastureland to build his lovely wife Nathalie her dream house. More recently, the grounds and manor were transformed into the Graylyn International Conference Center and Hotel, and The Mews (a former stable and poultry house surrounding an open courtyard) became our charge to design. Copious stone, pastoral calm, and French Normandy-style buildings offered us a wealth of inspiration (a dream for us), which we channeled into 36 elegantly informal, art-filled guestrooms, suites, a concierge lounge and fitness center that echo the rustic warmth of the building’s original purpose.
